Accessible or Not? Accommodation Review

Welcome to my first accommodation review! Let’s dive right in to this shall we?
At the start of 2022, I went on my first solo trip to Spain. As you would have read in my previous blog, I have been going to Spain since I was three or four and decided that now was the time to give back.
Spain is notorious for dog and animal abandonment, so I decided I would spend 7 weeks at Paws Patas Animal Shelter in Los Gallardos, Andalucia lending a helping hand.
There are four accommodations onsite for volunteers staying for those working 5 days a week for a minimum of 2 weeks.
I stayed in one of the two mobile homes (Casa Azul and Casa Verde) that are shared with other interns/volunteers when necessary. These mobile homes have two bedrooms, a basic kitchen with a refrigerator, and dining space. There is a shared washroom (shower, sink, toilet), washing machine and large extra fridge freezer onsite that everyone shares.
The accommodation can be suitable for those with more flexible movement and independence but if you cannot use steps and need space for a wheelchair, then this isn’t accessible for you. The shared washroom is only accessible from steps which can feel a bit daunting because everything is quite rough and makeshift! Paws Patas rely on volunteers and donations to keep open so, for now, the site is very ‘make do’.
There is also a small caravan (Casa Ariana) and two recently renovated studio flats (Casita Jungle and Casa Pablo). Casita Jungle is a cosy little studio flat with its own cooking area and a refrigerator. There is a separate shower room including toilet and sink next to the studio. Casa Pablo is a spacious studio flat, with a kitchen, dining area, bathroom and double bedroom. This studio is reserved for administrators who work full-time at the shelter for an extended period.
Both studios are more appropriate for those with limited mobility as they have more room and are easier to move about in.
If you want to know more about what can be done whilst volunteering at Paws Patas Animal Shelter, feel free to message me on Instagram (@cp.travelandphoto) or check out their website: https://paws-patas.org/volunteering/ .
My next post on the 12th January will look at how accessible Mojacar Playa is (the nearest beach side town I have known since I was three!).
See you there
