Accessible or Not? Activity Review

Fancy going skiing? But not sure if you are able enough? Don’t worry! I am here to give you some suggestions that worked for me.

I first went on a ski trip back in 2019 with Accessible Dreams and absolutely loved it! However, I didn’t think I would be capable of standing skiing, so lets see what I did instead.

This is called ‘Tandem Skiing’. You are secured in a seat on skis and a qualified instructor is your driver. They steer you so all you have to focus on is the incredible views around you! These chairs go on ski lifts, any slope and can reach amazing speeds… great for those, like me, who love the adrenaline rush and have a need for speed!

This is a service provided by Oxygene, a specialised company in La Plagne with qualified instructors who are amazing working with the disabled community. The whole team are incredible and I cannot recommend them enough!

In 2022, after not being able to do ski trips due to the pandemic, my dad and I decided it would be fun to do a mix of tandem skiing and ski lessons. I felt stronger than three years prior and I wanted to challenge myself. Those of you who know me personally, you know I need challenges and the idea of failing… lets just say it doesn’t end well!

So with the same company, we had four morning lessons and then the rest was sit skiing. I had no idea what to expect but my god was it thrilling! I LOVED IT! We had an instructor called Boris and he was so patient and encouraging. We stayed on the nursery slope for 2 days and then were able to do the slightly bigger slope with the ski lift (it was still classed as a learning slope, but it was longer and higher so!). Here’s a low quality video for you :)

In 2023, I had more lessons and was able to go all about the ski resort! Yes, there were bits that scared me, but 99% of it was incredible. I understand why people go skiing every season… it is addictive! It has turned into an annual holiday now, just me and my dad. He’s unfortunately a lot more accident prone than me, but we’re working on it!
